NCWS, NAWOJ Hail 21-Year Jail Term For Baby Rapist In Nasarawa, Call for Continued Justice for Victims

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the National Council for Women’s Societies (NCWS) have commended the judgment of the Nasarawa State Chief Judge, Justice Aisha Mohammed Bashir, who sentenced Ahmadu Yaro to 21 years in prison for the defilement of a three-month-old baby.

In an interview with newsmen, Comrade Hadiza Umar, Chairperson of NAWOJ, and Mrs. Mary Meshi, President of NCWS in the State, praised the verdict as a bold and necessary step in the fight against sexual and gender-based violence (GBV).

The women leaders described the sentence as a significant milestone in the protection of children’s rights and the promotion of a safer society. They expressed confidence that the punishment would serve as a strong deterrent to others who may contemplate such heinous crimes.

“We commend the judiciary for standing on the side of justice. This verdict gives hope to victims and sends a clear message that such acts will not go unpunished,” they said.

Both organizations reiterated their unwavering commitment to supporting survivors of GBV, advocating for justice, and raising awareness across communities.

They also appealed to members of the public to report any cases of abuse or suspicion of violence to relevant authorities, stressing the importance of collective action in addressing the scourge.
