Governor Sule: We Keyed Into Farming To Support President’s Renewed Hope On Agriculture
Nasarawa State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi A. Sule, has said his administration’s direct investment in large-scale farming is to align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on agriculture and food security.

Sule made this known in Lafia on Monday, September 15, 2025, while receiving Ms. Marion Moon, Technical Assistant on Agriculture to the President and Executive Secretary of the Presidential Food System Coordinating Unit (PFSCU), who was in the state to launch the Harvesting Hope Caravan and present an insurance award to the Governor.
The Governor explained that Nasarawa cultivated 2,000 hectares of rice last year and is now working on 1,300 hectares of virgin land in addition to existing fields. He noted that the Faro-44 rice variety planted is showing signs of a bumper harvest, with yields projected at 5–6 tons per hectare compared to the national average of 3–4.

He also called for greater federal support to harness River Benue’s agricultural potential and strengthen backward integration in crops such as rice and sugarcane. “Nigeria consumes up to two million tonnes of sugar annually but produces less than 2,000. Supporting out-growers and commercial farms is critical,” he stressed.
In her remarks, Moon praised Nasarawa’s proactive approach, saying the state was among 13 pilots selected to drive food security reforms. She explained that the PFSCU is working with data from 15,000 farmers across the state and highlighted the importance of insurance in protecting farmers from climate and economic risks.
The State’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Tanko Tunga, added that the new insurance premium cover for farmers will protect them against floods, droughts, pests, and other challenges, boosting productivity and stabilizing food supply.
