Lafia Golf Club: Commissioner’s Inspection Signals Revitalization Push
The Lafia Golf Club is poised for potential revitalization following an unannounced inspection by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu. The visit, aimed at assessing the facility’s current state and uncovering new revenue streams, signals the State Government’s commitment to improving its sporting infrastructure and repositioning the club as a key asset. The Commissioner was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan, and other senior ministry officials during the tour.
The visit included a comprehensive briefing from the Golf Club’s Captain, Engr. Tony Affa, who detailed the operational challenges and prospects of the facility. Commissioner Yakubu utilized the opportunity to conduct a thorough infrastructure assessment, engaging directly with the Captain, golfers, and support staff. This hands-on approach allowed the Commissioner to solicit first-hand input on practical measures to enhance the club’s overall performance and fortunes.
In his address, Commissioner Yakubu expressed satisfaction with the dedication shown by the club’s new management and patrons. He stressed the imperative for adopting innovative strategies to boost revenue generation and firmly establish the Lafia Golf Club as a center for golfing excellence within the region. This emphasis on strategic development aligns with the broader mandate of the Ministry to elevate the State’s sporting landscape.
The Commissioner reaffirmed that his visit was on behalf of Governor Abdullahi Sule, who remains deeply committed to developing sports from the grassroots level upward. He highlighted the Governor’s recent approval of funds for the renovation and upgrade of the facility, underscoring the government’s recognition of the club’s importance. This investment is intended to ensure the facility can “wear a new look” and meet modern standards.
Commissioner Yakubu acknowledged the specific concerns raised by the club’s leadership, assuring them that the Ministry had listened closely to the complaints concerning the facility. The identified “grey areas” will then be presented to the Governor with the hope of securing a positive response and necessary action to address the facility’s needs.
Club Captain Engr. Tony Effa used his presentation to highlight the club’s significant growth potential, citing opportunities to host major national and international tournaments, corporate events, and community-focused activities, all of which could drive revenue. However, he concurrently detailed pressing issues, including severe erosion threatening holes, encroachment by cattle rearers resulting in damaged fencing, and a critical lack of modern Golf equipment and machinery required to meet competitive standards.
Ultimately, the inspection tour is anticipated to initiate a new era of cooperation between the Ministry and the Golf Club Management.
