$100K, National Honours! Tinubu Rewards Super Falcons in Style After Historic WAFCON Triumph
Nigeria’s Super Falcons were on Monday given a grand state reception at the Presidential Villa in Abuja by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following their triumphant outing at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The reception came on the heels of their historic 3–2 comeback victory over host nation Morocco in Rabat, a result that sealed their record-extending 10th continental title.
President Tinubu, visibly thrilled, showered praise on the team for their bravery and doggedness, describing their performance as a source of national pride and renewed hope.
“The indomitable spirit of resilience, determination, and courage you displayed lifted the spirit of the entire nation,” the President said. “After that penalty, when I saw 2-1, my spirit was lifted, and I believe that of the nation too. You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now know their dreams are valid and achievable.”
To honour their achievement, Tinubu announced national honours and major incentives for both players and coaches:
Each of the 24 players and 11 technical crew members received:
- National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON)
- A three-bedroom flat in the Renewed Hope Housing Estate
- Cash reward equivalent to $100,000 (players) and $50,000 (coaches), payable in naira
The President also reaffirmed his unwavering support for Nigerian athletes, saying, “Once again, I congratulate you. My spirit is unyielding and will never die. God bless you.”
In an added gesture of solidarity, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced a joint commitment from all state governors ₦10 million each for every player and technical crew member.
The grand reception marked a fitting celebration for the Super Falcons, whose remarkable feat in Morocco has once again cemented their legacy in African women’s football.
