World Cup 26: Group C Heats Up As Nigeria Battle South Africa To A Draw

In a thrilling match, Nigeria and South Africa battled to a 1-1 draw in their highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualification clash in Uyo on Friday. The outcome has left Lesotho surprisingly atop Group C with five points.
South Africa’s Themba Zwane scored the first goal in the 29th minute, effortlessly gliding past Nigeria’s defense and firing past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. However, Nigeria’s Fisayo Dele-Bashiru equalized just a minute into the second half, turning brilliantly in the box and lashing past Ronwen Williams.
Despite the draw, Nigeria dominated the match, with substitute Samuel Chukwueze hitting the underside of the bar and Ademola Lookman forcing a full-length save from Williams in added time. Lookman also shot wide with three minutes left, as Nigeria pushed for a winner.
Lesotho’s 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe earlier on Friday propelled them to the top of Group C with five points. South Africa, Benin Republic, and Rwanda trail with four points each, while Nigeria has three points.
The draw defines the competitive nature of Group C, with all teams still in contention for the top spot. Nigeria will need to regroup and refocus for their next match, while South Africa will aim to build on their performance in Uyo.
