The Nasarawa State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) held an election on Thursday to choose new leaders. The election was very competitive, with two candidates winning and one position still undecided.
The election was supervised by Comr. Ikenna Okonkwo, the National SWAN Representative and Secretary General, to ensure fairness and transparency. Only 26 members were accredited and allowed to vote, and only the Chairmanship and Secretary positions were contested.
Leonard Abel from Daily Sun won the election for Secretary with 19 votes, beating Michael A. Umudjon from Option FM who got 7 votes. Abel who couldn’t hide his excitement, appreciated all those who voted for giving him the trust into the office of the scribe.
However, the election for Chairmanship interestingly ended up in a tie between Smah George Josiah of NBS and Abari Solomon Dogara of NTA, with both getting 13 votes. This means there will be another election to decide who wins.
The SWAN Electoral Committee (SWANECO) has promised to organize a fair re-run election, and members are being asked to contribute voluntarily to cover the costs. The committee wants to resolve the election quickly so that the organization can have effective leadership as soon as possible .
The election showed the maturity of members and also the commitment of members to move and grow the chapter into another level to match up and not left behind. The re-run election will be held on later date as announced by the Chairman of the electoral committee.
