Supreme Court Judgement: Court Set Thursday January 25 For Hearing On Bail Application For 38 Nasarawa Protesters

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Lafia,  Nasarawa State capital, has fixed  Thursday, January 25, 2024 for the hearing on the bail application for the 38 protesters arrested for alleged public disturbance in Lafia.

The Nigeria Police had on Friday January 19, 2024 arrested the protesters for blocking Lafia/Jos road after the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the victory of Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State.

The Police said that the protesters comprising five men and 33 women, had contravened the peace accord signed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Magistrate, Mohammed Abdullahi-Lanze fixed Thursday after listening to arguments by counsels to the complainant and defenders on the bail application.

He adjourned the sitting to Thursday while the accused persons would remain at the Lafia Custodian Centre till the next adjourn date.

The Magistrate also ordered the Commissioner of Police to produce the defendants in court on the next adjourn date for hearing of their bail application.

Earlier, Barr. Ayiwulu Baba-Ayiwulu, Counsel to the defendants said he had filed the bail application since Friday, January 19 and urged the court to grant his request.

On his part,  Danjuma Allu, Prosecuting Counsel representing the Commissioner of Police argued that they have seven days to reply to the application based on the provision of the law.

He therefore said that the court should give them more time to reply, since it is still within the time that the law provides. (NAN).
