In a keenly contested election, Smah George of NBS has been voted in as the new Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Nasarawa State Chapter. The election, which took place at the NUJ building in Lafia, Nasarawa State, saw Smah George poll 18 votes to emerge victorious over his opponent, Abari Solomon, who scored 9 votes.

The election was a rerun of a previous poll that had ended in a tie, with both candidates scoring 13 votes each. The rerun was necessitated by the tie, and it was clear that Smah George had gained momentum in the intervening period.

In addition to Smah George’s election as Chairman, other officers were also elected unopposed. Umar Muhammed emerged as Vice Chairman, while Nehemiah Gwamna and Esther Akaa were elected as Financial Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. Abel Leonard of The Sun had earlier defeated Mike of Option FM Akwanga to emerge as the new Public Relations Officer.

The new executive members were sworn in immediately after the election, with the representative of the National SWAN, Mr. Ikenna Victor Okonkwo, administering the oath of office. In his acceptance speech, Smah George thanked everyone for their sacrifices and promised to work tirelessly to make SWAN Nasarawa State a respected entity within and outside the state.

Smah George also praised his opponent, Abari Solomon, for his doggedness and sportsmanship, and promised to work with him if given the chance. He presented certificates of recognition to the members of the Electoral Committee (ELCOM) who had worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the election.

The new executive members have pledged to adhere strictly to their oath of office and work together to promote the interests of SWAN and its members in Nasarawa State. With this election, a new chapter has begun in the history of SWAN in the state, and all eyes are on the new executive to deliver on their promises.
