Salihu Alkali-Led Nasarawa NUJ Executives Get Nod For Second Tenure

The executives of the Nasarawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) under the leadership of Comrade Salihu Mohammed Alkali have gotten the nod of their members for a second term in office.

This happened during the triennial elective convention of the State council which held today (Thursday July 20, 2023) at the Nasarawa State Press Centre along Makurdi Road, Lafia.

Inaugurating the new executives shortly after they were affirmed by the congress of the NUJ Nasarawa State Council, the NUJ President, Chief Chris Isiguzo urged the new EXCO to justify the confidence reposed in them by their members by rendering quality service.

The NUJ President who was represented by the Vice President of NUJ Zone D, Mr. Chris Atsaka also commended the leadership style of the Chairman of the Nasarawa State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Salihu Mohammed Alkali which according to him, is responsible for the peace and progress experienced in the council over the past three years.

He called on the journalists in Nasarawa State to continue supporting their leaders so that they will record even more achievements in the next three years.

The NUJ President also took time to appreciate the Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule for always supporting the activities of the NUJ in the State.

The inauguration of the new EXCO was witnessed by some special dignitaries including the Permanents Secretary, Cabinet Affairs in the office of the Secretary to the Nasarawa State Government, Alhaji Mohammed Ilyasu Idde.

Also present were some veteran journalists including Mr. Allahnana Attah who is also a retired Permanent Secretary, Mr. Matthew Kuju the founder of Eggonnews as well as Alhaji Muhktar Wakeel the founder of Nasarawa Newsline.

In their remarks, they all commended members of the NUJ for their orderly conduct which made the process of getting new leaders for the union a rancor-free one. They called on the members to continue to be loyal to their leaders while urging the leaders to justify the loyalty of their members by providing selfless service.

In his acceptance speech, Chairman of the NUJ Nasarawa State Council, Comrade Salihu Mohammed Alkali thanked all the members of the union for re-electing him for a second term.

He assured them that along with his team, they will ensure they improve on the good policies and activities of the past three years especially as it concerns the welfare of members.

He also appealed to the members to always feel free to approach him or any member of his EXCO to offer suggestions that will move the union forward.

Comrade Alkali appreciated the State Government under Engr. Abdullahi Sule for according journalists in Nasarawa State the needed support and assured the government of the resolve of the journalists to always adhere to the ethics of their profession for the development of Nasarawa State.

Other members of the executives returning for a second term include the Secretary, Mr. Sunday John of the Correspondents’ Chapel, the Assistant Secretary, Mr. Abubakar Sadiq Ayigu from the State Ministry of Information, the Treasurer, Anna Jatau Kuje from Nasarawa Broadcasting Service (NBS) and Abari Solomon the Financial Secretary from NTA Chapel.

The other two members of the executives who are just coming for their first term are the Vice Chairman, Adamu Elafikwu Joel from Ministry of Information and Mary Elawani Onyaneh the Auditor from NBS Chapel.

Recall that the congress of the NUJ Nasarawa State Council had on 27th of April 2023, constituted a 7-man committee to organize elections that will produce executives that will lead the association to 2026. The committee had advertised the sales of forms for the various positions and at the expiration of the period allowed, only those who were eventually returned elected had purchased forms. With the permission of the National Headquarters of the NUJ, they were returned elected unopposed hence their inauguration.
