President Buhari Signs Executive Order Granting State Legislature and Judiciary Financial Autonomy

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed an executive order which effectively grants financial autonomy to the legislative and judiciary arms of government in the States of the country.

The President signed the executive order today (May 22, 2020) and announced it to the public through his official Twitter handle.

He said: “Based on the power vested in me under Section 5 of the 1999 Constitution (as Amended), I, today, signed into law Executive Order No. 10 of 2020 for the implementation of Financial Autonomy of State Legislature and State Judiciary.

“This administration will continue to do everything to strengthen the principles and practice of democracy and democratic governance in Nigeria.”

With the signing of the Executive Order No. 10 of 2020 into law, the Accountant-General of the Federation can authorise deduction of the money from source (Federal Allocation) in cases where any State of the federation fails to release monies meant for the legislative and judiciary arms of the government in the State.
