Nasarawa University Sets Up Engineering Faculty

Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK), has constituted a 13-man steering committee on the setting up of the institution’s engineering faculty.

The faculty is located at Gudi, near Akwanga, will begin with three courses namely Civil and Structural Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, then Processing Engineering.

The steering committee is to be headed by the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive of National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Prof M S Haruna.

Other members of the committee include the Registrar of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Prof Joseph Odigure, academicians and professionals in the field of engineering.

This is coming barely two weeks after the institution inaugurated similar committee on the establishment of College of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Vice Chancellor of NSUK, Prof Suleiman Bala Mohammed, while speaking during the inauguration yesterday, said the desire of the institution to establish the faculty is base on the fact that technology is the driving force around the world.

The VC said the idea to establish the faculty was muted  last year inline with his five years rolling plans to make the university great.

He disclosed that through NASENI, the institution has signed an MoU with the University of Newfoundland through the links of Prof M S Haruna, for possible collaboration.

Prof Mohammed, who appealed to the members of the steering committee to bring their wealth of experiences to bear, said they have procured books and other materials worth 13 million naira for the take off of the faculty.

Some of the major terms of reference of the committee includes, to consider the pathway and timeline for immedia take-off of the programme.

“To come up with the curriculum of the programmes.

“To consider the advert for staff recruitment and advise us appropriately and suggest calibre of staff for the programme.

“To consider and make inputs to the Iist of equipment for the programme.

“Identify linkages and support for the programmes with relevant institutions and organizations both locally and internationally” among others.

In his acceptance speech, the chairman of the committee Prof. Muhammed Sani Haruna, who spoke on behalf of the committee members said the establishment of Faculty of Engineering in NSUK is long over due.

Prof. Haruna assured that the committee will work day and night to deliver within the timeline, saying technology and engineering is driving the world economy.
