Nasarawa To Convert Mechanic Village To Central Motor Park

The Nasarawa State Government has disclosed plans to convert the mechanic village located in Bukkan Sidi to a modern central motor park.
Governor Abdullahi Alhaji Sule disclosed this while addressing members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) led by the State executives on a courtesy call at the Government House on Friday (July 5, 2019).
The governor added that arrangement has reached advanced stage to relocate the mechanics to a new site located in Shabu area, following which the old mechanic village will be handed over to the NURTW to accommodate commercial vehicles aimed at curbing indiscriminate siting of roadside motor parks in Lafia, the state capital.
Governor Sule said further that as soon the mechanics left their present location, government will invite the union to study modalities to convert the area into a model motor park.
On the request of the union for the government to evolve a revolving loan scheme to enable their members own their vehicles, the governor disclosed that already there were plans to enter into partnership with Lanre Shittu Motors from Lagos, with the company having shown interest in jointly floating the state transport company.
“I’m happy with your call for a revolving loan. I just met with the management of Lanre Shittu Motors and they showed interest in assisting our administration. My goal is to provide cheap and affordable transport for the people,” the governor said.
He said even though Lanre Shittu Motors wanted to enter into partnership with the state government, he is ready to redirect the partnership to include the union, stressing that his administration will support the NURTW to function effectively.
Governor Sule appreciated members of the union for massively supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari, national and state legislatures in the recently concluded general election.
Earlier in an opening remark, state chairman of the union, Alhaji Salihu Adamu commended the governor for appointing youths in his administration.
Represented by the secretary of the union, members of the NURTW made some demands on government to carry them along, including the construction of a modern central motor park to accommodate the growing population in Lafia, inclusion in the distribution of fertilizer and setting up a revolving loan scheme among others.
