Nasarawa State Government Warns Residents Of Communities In Four Local Government Areas Of Impending Flood
The Nasarawa State Government has issued a warning to residents of communities in four Local Government Areas of the State of impending flood.
Speaking to Eggonnews in her office in Lafia on Wednesday (August 21, 2024), the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Special Duties on Humanitarian Services and NGOs, Princess Margaret Elayo said residents of communities in Awe, Doma, Nasarawa and Toto have been given early warning about impending flood so that they can take appropriate measures to protect themselves and their properties.
She said: “I went on NBS to educate our people about flood. And I told them upfront, you don’t wait for government to tell you to move. You know when rain is bad. You’ve been in this community for many, many years. And you have been experiencing this for many, many years. You know how bad it gets when this happens. Before you get to the level of you not being able to get out, get out.
“You come to the government, come to my ministry and we will protect you. We’ll give you a place or things that you will use in making sure that you are not affected by the flood or your property maybe is going to go. But your lives matters to us.
“So I’ve gone on air to educate people. If it does happen that maybe you are dragging your feet, because some of us can do that. And it’s not just here. Generally, when you have things coming, somebody would say, it’s not going to be bad. It’s not going to be that hard. And then we kept dragging our feet. And I said it, I say, if you are that kind of a person and it happens, just go ahead and get yourself out. Leave the property. You’re going to lose it. But then when you are alive, there’s evidence that you’re going to get it back. You’re going to work. We’re going to support you. You’re going to relocate back to your system.”
Princess Margaret Elayo also stated further that officials from the humanitarian ministry are still visiting the communities to gather more data so as to be better equipped to help in the case of any crises.
The Humanitarian Commissioner also spoke on the recently concluded Humanitarian Week celebration in the State which she described as a huge success.
She said that valuable lessons were learnt which will positively impact the humanitarian services being provided by the Nasarawa State Government while calling on all the citizens of the State irrespective of social strata to join hands with the government to develop the State.
