Project 10 Million: Nasarawa State Joins National Campaign to Tackle Hypertension and Diabetes

Lafia, Nigeria – October 27, 2024: The Nasarawa State Ministry of Health is excited to announce the commencement of Project 10 Million – Know Your Numbers, Control Your Numbers, a state-wide initiative aligned with the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum’s national campaign to address the rising cases of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly hypertension and diabetes, across Nigeria.

NCDs like hypertension and diabetes have become a serious health burden, accounting for around 27% of annual deaths in Nigeria. The risk of dying from these conditions between ages 30 and 70 is estimated at 17%, underscoring the urgent need for action.

Globally, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of NCD-related deaths, claiming 17.9 million lives each year, followed by cancer (9.3 million), chronic respiratory diseases (4.1 million), and diabetes (2.0 million, including kidney diseases caused by diabetes). Combined, these four disease groups are responsible for over 80% of premature NCD deaths. Risk factors such as tobacco use, lack of physical activity, harmful alcohol consumption, poor diets, and air pollution significantly increase the likelihood of death from an NCD.

In response , Project 10 Million aims to screen 300,000 residents across Nasarawa State, aged 18 and above, for diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.

Notably, Nasarawa State is the only state incorporating hepatitis B and C screening and vaccination into this national campaign. All screening services will be provided free of charge.
This is made possible due to  complete buy in, ownership,  political will and approval of his excellency engr  governor of Nasarawa state engr Abdullahi A Sule under whose leadership the  health sector has continually enjoyed tremendous support and increased funding.

The campaign will be rolled out in phases, starting in Lafia, Akwanga, and Keffi, and will reach both urban and rural areas, with special focus on underserved communities to ensure equitable access to free screenings and vaccinations.

The objectives of this campaign are to raise public awareness, enhance data collection, and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders to improve health outcomes in the state. With a target of reaching 300,000 residents, the initiative seeks to make a meaningful impact in reducing the burden of these silent killers.
