Nasarawa Govt Distributes Food Items Worth N29m To Boarding Schools

The Nasarawa State Government has distributed food items worth N29 million to 29 boarding schools in the state.

Revealing this to the press in Lafia during the flagging-off exercise, Nasarawa State’s Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology,Hajiya Fatu Sabo, said feeding all the students in public boarding schools was part of the free education policy of the government.

In her words, “We spend N29 million every month feeding students from the 29 boarding schools we have in the state.

“Every month, we buy various food items such as rice, beans, maize, yam, maggi, palm oil and distribute to the schools for the feeding of the students.

“This we believe would cushion the effects of the economic situation and reduce the burden on the parents,” Haj. Fatu Sabo added.

The Commissioner noted that the ministry had set machinery in place to check possible diversion of the food items.

She warned those with any negative tendencies to desist or risk facing the full wrath of the law when they are caught.

The Commissioner therefore assured parents of government’s determination to sustain the feeding of the boarding students.

“Governor Abdullahi Sule has directed the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to consider the money for the feeding as first-line-charge,” she explained.

On his part, Saidu Usman, Principal of Government Science School Lafia who spoke on behalf of other Principals, assured the government that the food would be used judiciously.

He said that his school is serving the students breakfast by 10:00am, lunch 2:00pm and diner by 6:00pm respectively.

Meanwhile, Aliyu Omame and Gift Okaku, Head-Boy and Head-Girl of Government Science School Lafia, told the Commissioner that their feeding has improved from January 2020.
