Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has officially confirmed he will be in Abuja to receive the highly coveted Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria (SWAN) National Merit Sports Award. Announcing his availability during the unveiling of kits and trophies for the Governor’s Cup Football Tournament in Lafia, Governor Sule emphasized that his administration views sports as a serious business and a key area for investment. He highlighted the tangible results of this focus, noting that the state boasts successful teams across the leagues, including Nasarawa United currently leading the Nigeria Premier League, the cup-winning Nasarawa Amazons, and the impressive Basira FC. The Governor stressed that Nasarawa State remains hospitable to investors keen on partnering to develop sports talent for global performance.

SWAN is honoring Governor Sule for his visionary leadership and milestone achievements in promoting sports excellence, inclusivity, and socio-economic growth through sporting initiatives. Acknowledging the upcoming award, the Governor insisted that the recognition belongs to everyone, stating, “It’s not about me; it’s about you because you are the main actors and stakeholders.” He specifically praised the efforts of the Commissioner, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, his Ministry staff, and the State Football Association Chairman, Salisu Usman Galadima. In a show of gratitude and unity, Governor Sule personally urged and even offered to pay for the hotel accommodation of stakeholders to join him in Abuja for the ceremony.

The SWAN Award ceremony is a central part of the association’s 60th-anniversary celebration and is scheduled for Friday, October 31st, 2025, at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The event promises to be an illustrious gathering, with Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, serving as the Distinguished Guest of Honour.
