Former Nigerian winger, George Finidi, has been formally unveiled as the new head coach of the Super Eagles by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The unveiling ceremony took place Monday (May 13, 2024) at the NFF secretariat in Abuja and was attended by dignitaries, including the Sports Minister, NFF president, and secretary-general.

Finidi, who is 53 years old, has a wealth of experience in football, having represented Nigeria at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups. He served as an assistant to former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro for 20 months and also acted as caretaker coach for friendlies against Ghana and Mali in March this year.

The NFF has given Finidi a mandate to ensure that the team qualifies for the 2026 World Cup.

The NFF also gave the new Super Eagles boss the free hands to select his assistants and he wasted no time to choose Daniel Amokachi as an assistant, Olatunji Baruwa as a goalkeeper coach, Benjamin James as a fitness trainer, and Mehmet Ozturk as a video analyst.

The Super Eagles’ next game is against South Africa in a World Cup Qualifier in Uyo, which will be Finidi’s first official game in charge. Football fans across Nigeria have welcomed Finidi’s appointment and are hoping for a new era of success for the Super Eagles.
